Frogs and toads part3 – Amphibians :
Most male frogs and toads have vocal sacs to help them croak loudly. Some frogs have a sac in the throat, while others have a sac on either side of the head. When the frog croaks, the vocal sac is inflated like a balloon and acts as an amplifier. The loud croaks of the males attract the females during the mating season.
Goldi’s frog, about 4 cm long, lives in the forests of Peru and Ecuador in South America. The female carries the eggs in a pouch on her back. Eventually she goes into the water where the eggs hatch into tadpoles.
The arrow-poison frogs of Central and South America are brightly colored and about 4 cm long. with brilliant colours these frogs warn other animals that they are poisonous. Natives tip their arrows with the poison which is secreted through the frog’s skin. The male carries the eggs on his back. Even after hatching, the tadpoles cling to the father’s back until they develop further.
The North American bullfrog, about 19 cm long, is the largest North American frog. It sometimes eats small birds and turtles. The female, which is larger than the male, has been known to lay several thousand eggs at a time. Man eats this frog’s legs which are considered a delicacy.
A bullfrog tadpole: tadpole of a bullfrog about 14 cm long, is large and remains in this form for one to two years.
The midwife toad, about 5 cm long, is a water-toad which lives in Europe. During mating, the female lays the eggs which the male fertilizes and then carries on his hindlegs and over his back. For about three weeks, the male acts as midwife, taking care of the eggs. When the larvae are fully developed, the toad enters the water where the eggs hatch into tadpoles.
